Ultimately success or failure in any organization or environment depends upon its leadership. Leadership is about how individuals are influenced and how someone is influenced is largely linked to how they are motivated. Motivation elements fall into 3 key areas.

Fear …. A work environment dominated by fear will produce next to zero discretionary effort from its employees resulting in low productivity and thus lower profits for an organization.

Reward …. A work environment where reward is the key motivator will produce discretionary effort but at diminishing returns. The same level of reward over time will mean less since over time the reward grows as an expectation and lessens as a motivational tool.

The Third Level of Motivation (not mentiond here) provides for the unleashing of the nearly unlimited discretionary effort of employees in an organization and is where we focus our time and effort in analysis and development of the leadership team.
